This presentation provides a comprehensive examination of stroke pathology and how it informs targeted treatment programs. We begin by identifying the signs of common stroke presentations and exploring the root-cause risk factors that increase stroke susceptibility. Participants will learn about the different types of strokes and the critical changes that occur in the brain following a stroke.
A key focus will be the three functional components of a stroke: the core, penumbra, and diaschisis. We will discuss how each of these components manifests in major areas of the brain, including the cortex, thalamus, basal ganglia, cerebellum, and brain stem, and how they may present in a clinical examination. The session concludes with a therapeutic approach to stroke rehabilitation, providing clinicians with practical strategies to support recovery.
