Saccades: The 100 Millisecond Window into Brain Health

Presentation Summary:
This presentation explores how saccadic eye movements, often completed in just 100 milliseconds, provide a critical window into assessing brain function. Learn how to assess saccades as a rapid and accurate neurological evaluation to guide your rehabilitation

Saccades, the rapid eye movements between fixation points, offer a 100 millisecond window into brain health, making them a powerful tool for neurological assessment. In this session, participants will learn to assess both reflex and voluntary saccades, exploring their unique characteristics such as latency, acceleration, velocity, deceleration, amplitude, and accuracy.

We will discuss how abnormalities in these saccadic parameters can reveal dysfunctions in various brain regions, from the brainstem to higher cortical areas. By incorporating saccade assessments into routine neurological evaluations, clinicians can achieve faster, more accurate diagnoses and develop targeted interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the importance of both reflex and voluntary saccades in brain health assessment.
  2. Learn to evaluate saccades, focusing on characteristics such as latency, velocity, amplitude, and accuracy.
  3. Identify how saccadic abnormalities signal dysfunctions in different brain regions.
  4. Integrate saccade testing into routine neurological evaluations for quick and accurate assessments.
  5. Use detailed saccadic performance data to guide targeted neurological interventions.
